The Philosophy of Public Health

Philosophy has a warm place in my heart for personal and academic reasons. This is one of the courses I’ve been taking while abroad which is called Public Health Ethics. The best part about the class is we start the day at 08:00 bright and early on a Friday woohoo! Well tongue in cheek aside I personally made a choice to enroll in this class, and I’m very glad that I did. The thing about public health is that it’s very complex and not as easy as I thought it would be. I didn’t think it was that easy to begin with either. As an America I can personally attest that public health is a very special topic in the public sphere back in the US of A! The thing is that it isn’t as black and white as someone like me who doesn’t know that much about the policy making process. My interest is public health does continue to grow the longer I’m in this class and I hope that one day that I can contribute to the endeavor of universal health care becoming a reality back home in America.

As an anthropologist and scholar I really want to give my nod of approval to philosophy. It’s really a fascinating discipline that I hope I can attain a better understanding and appreciation for as time passes on. I use to think that there was some endless debate that requires a lifetime of investment in understanding philosophy to ‘get it’ ya know? Well I’ve been told to ‘chill out’ by basically all my loved ones in many areas of my life because well I get caught up in my own head a lot. Before I had not the slightest idea what: deontology, utilitarianism, libertarianism, and paternalism was. Nor did I believe that those theories had anything to do with critiquing public health! It’s really humbling to look at things from different perspectives and frameworks. I’m learning a lot and I’m enjoying it! Like philosophy things aren’t always as deep and mysterious that we make it out to be. That’s okay, really it is.

Often simplicity can be very beautiful.

I’m not an expert blogger by any means! I’m honestly doing this because I wanted to try something new and step outside of my comfort zone. I hope you enjoy my posts and please comments are encouraged because this is fun and I like having the opportunity to exchange thoughts between people! Peace love and happiness! Ignite Hope!
